History

Not much is documented regarding the Palolem Beach. This is one reason why it is still in a pristine condition up until today. The first resort was erected on this beach in 1989.

Overview

Picturesque Palolem Beach, enclosed by thick forest of coconut palms in South Goa is arguably the state’s most beautiful beach. The beach is spread over an area of 1’ 966 km. The once empty, palm- fringed sands of Palolem are now filled with fishing boats offering dolphin view. There are jet skies, banana rides and other activities taking place as well. Excellent seafood can be found everywhere and there are a lot of well- run beach hut resorts. Th beach huts range from very basic to somewhat luxurious with ensuite huts becoming more common every year. The main entrance of the beach is at the centre of Palolem beach and is very very busy and often overcrowded. But to the Northern  and the Southern ends, one can find peace amd calm and some very beautiful beach hut resorts. The Northern end has a lovely tidal river, which joins the Arabian Sea on which one can enjoy charming bird – watching boat rides. On the other hand, Southern end of Palolem Beach ends in the famous Neptune’s Point, which is a rocky outcrop that forms a divider between Palolem Beach and Colomb Bay. The legendary silent party rages under the Starry sky at Neptune’s Point. This party has so many people dancing but actually only the regular partygoers hear the music. Once a participant enters, he is given wireless headphones with different channels to choose from. The tourists and party people dance the night away without anyone else hearing the bang of the drums. Alphan Bar, another late nightspot is there which has a weekly headphone party. A day in Palolem will never be enough.

History

The fort was constructed in 1612 to guard against the Dutch and the Marathas. It was a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe at that time. The construction of the fort began during the reign of the Catholic king Dom Filippe, with the orders of the municipality levying 1 percent duty towards protection and defense of ships approaching the fort. The fort was finally completed in 1612 by the members of the municipality under the administration of Viceroy Ruy Tavara. Fort Aguada was the most prized and crucial fort for the Portugese. It was once the grandstand of 79 cannons.

The fort has many natural springs and was used as a watering hole for the ships which came here after their long journey from Lisbon. From the south of the Candolim is the long peninsula and at the rock head of this peninsula is the fort. As you move inside the fort, you will be astonished to see the unfolding beauty of this massive structure which comprises of a 19th century lighthouse, an enormous water tank and a prison in the basement which is interestingly the largest in Goa.
