Pune

Pune is a popular city that is situated in the Maharashtra state of India. The city has established itself as the educational hub of the country with a number of education institutions across a variety of fields setting up their campuses in this city. There are a number of students who come here to study engineering, medicine, arts, media and other disciples of study.

Pune has more than 1600-year old history. The city was founded as Pataleshwar Caves during the 5th century. The kings of Rashtrakuta dynasty built a beautiful temple that is situated near to the caves and is called as Punyeshwar. This temple was destroyed by Sutan during the 13th century. Since then this area is called as Pune and since it is located in Maharashtra, most of the population of this city are maharashtrians.

Reaching Pune

Being one of the India's major educational hubs, the city of Pune has been well connected by air, land and rail links. There is no airport in Pune but the Air Force station is used for handling all the civil aviation traffic. This air base is situated in Lohegaon. The airport has limited number of flights because the airport is under the control of Indian Air Force. The airport is located about 10 kilometres away from main Pune city and it takes about one hour to reach here. The omnipresent Indian Railways network is used to connect the Pune to the rest of the country. There are a number of local, intercity and express trains to this city. Pune is situated on the prestigious golden Quadrilateral highway project and thus is well connected to the rest of the country.

Attractions in Pune

Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and it is the home to Marathi film industry.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: This exotic museum belongs to Raja Dinkar Holkar who was a powerful Holkar king. This museum is known for the Rajasthani style of architecture. It is located on the Baji Rao Road and has a huge collection of Indian arts and crafts. There are 2000-year old pottery objects and sculptures.

Darshan Museum: This museum is known for its light and sound show which is based on the 3D rendering technologies. This 100 minute show highlights the various life events and other happenings of Sadhu Vaswani.

Aga Khan Palace: This palace was belonged to Aga Khan who played an important role in the India's freedom struggle. He joined hands with Gandhiji in the 1942's Quit India Movement. The palace has a number of photos of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife.

Pateleshwar Caves: These rock temple were built by the Rashtrakuta kings during the 8th century. These caves are situated in the heart of the city and thus can be easily reached. These caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many worshippers come here on the festival of Maha Shivratri and Nag Panchmi.
