Kanpur is one of the major cities of India. This city is situated in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. This city is called as leather capital of India and Manchester of East due to presence of a number of industries and factories. This city is located on the banks of River Ganges. This city is also becoming a major educational hub in the country with the establishment of IIT and other famous engineering and arts college in this city.
The name of the city is derived from the Chandela dynasty where this city was called as Kanhaiyapur, which meant as town of Lord Krishna. The Britishers further anglicised this city as Caunpur. The ancient British map shows this place as Kanpur. This place played an important part during the India's freedom struggle. Many local heroes sacrificed their lives for the country.
Reaching Kanpur
The city is one of the major industrial centres of India. The city is located on the national corridor of the Indian Railways which connects almost all the major cities of India. There are a number of express trains such as Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi which connects Kanpur to many cities of India. Besides this, the best way to reach Kanpur is by the road as there is limited air connectivity. The Kanpur Airport has limited domestic flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bangalore and other few selected cities. Another amusing fact about this airport is that there are no flights on Sundays.

Shri Radha Temple: This temple is also known as J K Temple and is situated on the banks of River Gumti. This temple is known for its art and architecture. There are a number of statues and sculptures of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The temple looks magnificent at night due to the lighting that is done on it. The temple can get crowded on Sundays.
Massacre Park: This Park is constructed to pay tribute to the Indian martyrs and other soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country during the Caunpur mutiny during the Revolt of Independence in 1857.
Nana Rao Park: This is another important place for the Caunpur mutiny where Tantya Tope who was an important personality during the revolt used to hold meeting during the struggle.
Bithoor: This is a popular picnic spot that is situated on the outskirts of the city. Do take a boat ride along the river Ganga when you come here.
