Jodhpur

Jodhpur is one of the largest cities of Rajasthan and is also called as the Gateway to Thar Desert. The city is also called as Sun City mainly due to the shining of the city during the summer season.

The city of Jodhpur came into existence in 1459 when Rao Jodha founded this magnificent city. Rao Jodha was a prime chieftain of the Rajputs and thus this city has a large influence of the Rajoput culture and tradition. The Rathore Empire was known as Marwar and was one of the largest kingdoms of the Rajputana. The city of Jodhpur served as the capital of the Marwar.

The city of Jodhpur is also known as the Blue City due to the presence of the old houses in the city that have the shades of blue.

Jodhpur is one of the popular tourist destinations of India. Many tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy the beauty of the Thar Desert.

Jodhpur has a small domestic terminal which is designed to handle only a limited number of flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur and Bangalore. This airport is situated outside of the city and there are auto rickshaws and taxis that are easily available.

Jodhpur is an important station of the North Western division of Railways and there are a number of regular trains that connect this city to the rest of India.

Many travel operators hire cars or taxis to reach Jodhpur. There are regular bus services to this city also.

The city of Jodhpur is known for its forts and palace that were made during the time of the Rajputs. Some of the popular forts of Jodhpur are:

Mahrangarh Fort is the largest fort of Rajathan and it occupies a significant amount of area of the city. This fort was founded in 1458 as the site of the capital of Rao Jodha's new capital. The fort is situated on top of a hill that is about 150 meters above the ground level of the city. The fort provides you some of the best views of the city.

Jaswant Thada is another popular tourist destination that is situated in Mahrangarh. This place has royal cenographs that are made completely of white marble.

Mandore is another popular tourist destination that was the capital of the Marwar before Jodhpur.

Umaid Bhwan Palace is situated in the southern part of the city and was built in 1944. This palace serves as the residence of the present Maharaja of the Jodhpur. Half of the building has been transformed into a super luxury five star hotel.

Khejarla Fort is an exotic place that offers you an enlightening experience of the rural life. This fort has been made up of red sandstone and is a classic example of the Rajput style of architecture.
