Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the biggest Airport in North India. It is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The whole greater Kolkata metro area is being served by this Airport. This airport was also known as Dum Dum Airdrome. It is situated 17 Km away from Kolkata's city center. It is the biggest airport in northern India. It has also been the attraction of history during the period of British rule. It was constructed in 1927. Its domestic departure hall has been given by Air India, Jet Airways.
It has four terminals, a domestic terminal made in 1990s, an international terminal, which is the oldest as well as cargo terminal. The Airport has cafeterias, check-in kiosks and new ticket counters, along with four aerobridge. There has been an increase in the numbers of passengers in the last three-four years and so the Airport Authority of India is making fourth terminal at the airport. Runways would also be lightened according to new plans. It is capable to manage 3600 flights daily.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is also linked to the suburban railway system. There was an airport hotel called Ashoka and now is being planned to convert it into a five star hotel and shopping mall. This will attract Kolkata metro route, which is also being planned near the Airport, and it would be named as Jai Hind. A new integrated terminal is being made in L-shaped structure. It will have 104 checks in counters and 44 immigration counters. It would also have in-line baggage system. Currently Volvo bus service has been introduced and it is fully air conditioned. This service really helps passengers so that they can reach the airport easily.
It has a cargo handling capacity and it finds fuel from Bharat Petroleum and Indian oils. Oberai Flight Services and TAJ-SATS provide their service to the passengers of the airport. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport has been the fifth busiest airport of India and ninth busiest airport by international point of view during the period of April 2006 to March 2011.As per the plan to build this airport vast it would be able to manage 4 million passengers from December 2011.
