Chennai International Airport is the Best in South India. It was earlier known as Madras Airport. Chennai is the capital of the Tamilnadu, one of the important states in south India. Chennai is the attraction for commercial and industrial activities. Chennai Airport is situated at Tirusalam, 7 Km south of Chennai, India. It has been considered as busiest airport during the financial year of 2010-2011. And the numbers of its passengers will be double when its reconstruction will be completed at March 2012. Governor of Madras presidency L. Sriamulu Naidu gifted the land for its construction.
Its international terminal named after the former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Annadurai. Its main destinations are London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Muscat, Bahrain, Dhahran, Jeddah, Singapore, Kualalampur, and Sri Lanka. It is the hub for many international airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Malaysians Airlines, Air Lanka, Oman Air, Gulf Air and Saudia. Kamraj is the name of its domestic terminal which is also named after another former chief minister of Tamilnadu. It is the hub for many domestic airlines such as Air India, Blue Dart, Jet Airways and Spice Jet. And it has twenty domestic destinations all over the nation. Its old terminal is used for cargo flights. The name of old terminal is Meenambakkam.
Currently paid taxis and private cars are the only medium to reach till Chennai Airport. But state Government has planned to make new metro rail which will be connected to the airport from many parts of the city. And this plan will be complete till 2013 or 2014. It will really facilitate the passengers. In addition, if you have to go to the city then you can find a cab at a fixed fare and these cabs are available for twenty-four hours.
Airport Authority of India operates it and is also doing the work of its reconstruction. AAI is taking the services of four firms for the redevelopment and modernization of the Chennai Airport. Its runways, taxiways, aprons are being remade. According to its new plan its new terminal is being reconstructed in a better way. After the complete reconstruction of this place the airport will be able to handle approximately 23 million passengers.
